William "Bill" Engler

Aug. 11, 1937 - May 8, 2018

San Bruno, CA

On Tuesday, May 8, Bill Engler passed away peacefully with his wife and best friend, Connie, holding his hand. He was a cherished and loved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend to many.

Bill loved his family fiercely and would do anything for any one of them. He loved to travel and especially loved to visit his ancestral country of Ireland. Hawaii -- and its golf courses -- was also a favorite destination. Bill was a kind and generous man, whose calm demeanor and gentle manner endeared people to him. His warm smile and easygoing nature will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was one-of-a-kind.

A San Francisco native, Bill grew up on 32nd Avenue, the eldest son of Joseph and Mathilda (Healy) Engler. He attended Holy Name elementary school, St. Ignatius High School (Class of 1955) and graduated from the University of San Francisco.

Bill never lost touch with the friends of his youth. He rarely missed the monthly luncheon with his fellow classmates of '55 and some of Bill's neighborhood buddies from the Sunset remained his friends from boyhood onward. He was proud of his two grandchildren who continued the S.I. tradition Sean and Madeleine MacNaughton (2016 and 2020, respectively).

An athlete for most of his life, Bill began working as golf caddy at the Olympic Club when he was 11. He was an avid golfer and took advantage of any place he could find to practice his swing, which may have included hopping a fence or two. For years, Bill ran in the Bay to Breakers and was an active member of the South End Rowing Club and a regular on their handball courts.

Bill spent 40 years working for the federal government, beginning when he joined the National Labor Relations Board in San Francisco in 1967. He served as a field examiner for many years and later oversaw a team of attorneys and examiners resolving or litigating labor disputes.

After his retirement, he spent 15 years as a highly sought after labor arbitrator.

True to his Jesuit education, Bill held deeply rooted beliefs of social justice, fairness and equity for all, especially to those whose voices he felt were stifled in the workplace. This belief was the underpinning of his dedication to workers' rights and fair labor practices for more than 55 years.

For decades, Bill and his family shared a prayer before dinner.

"Dear God, thank you for the food you've given us and thank you for giving us each other. Please help us to love each other and understand each other. Amen"

Bill deeply believed that respect, equity, tolerance and kindness toward others was possible if people would try to understand one another. He practiced this personally and professionally, and in his faith and his community.

Bill is survived by his wife of 48 years, Connie Engler; three sons, Kevin and Patrick of San Francisco and Michael of Corona, Calif.; two daughters, Jennifer Westbrook of Pleasant Hill and Theresa Engler-MacNaughton of Montara, and nine grandchildren.

The oldest of six brothers and sisters, Bill is also survived by his three sisters, Jean Etcheverry, Maureen Engler and Virginia Wolff, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A special thank you to the caretakers, nurses and doctors at Mission House Hospice and Peninsula Hospital. Your kindness will be remembered.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Ignatius College Preparatory Scholarship Fund and/or the Lewy Body Dementia Association.

A funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m., June 2, at St. Robert Church, 1380 Crystal Springs Road, San Bruno, CA, 94066. It will be immediately followed by a celebration of Bill's life at the Embassy Suites Hotel, 150 Anza Blvd., Burlingame, CA 94010.

Levy Middlebrooks '84 & Gil Haskell '61 inducted into SF Prep Hall of Fame

Congrats to Levy Middlebrooks and Gil Haskell, who were honored last Saturday night at the SF Prep Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.

Haskell, who successfully coached in the NCAA and NFL for many years, earned entry into the foundation for his skill at SI, first as a student-athlete playing football for Pat Malley '49 and then as head varsity football and track coach. In his four years as a track coach, his teams won four frosh-soph league titles and three WCAL varsity championships — the biggest win happening at the Carlmont Relays in 1972 against some of the best teams in the Bay Area.

He coached the Wildcat football team between 1973 and 1977 and sported a 34–15–0 record (.694), which included four 7-win seasons out of the five he coached. Perhaps his greatest victory with SI came in late 1977 when the 'Cats traveled to SCU's Buck Shaw Stadium and defeated the nation's number-two-ranked Bellarmine Bells, 8–0.

Standing beside Haskell at the ceremony will be Middlebrooks, one of the most dominant basketball players in SI history. He led the Wildcats to back-to-back WCAL championships, and his 1984 team played for the state title after winning the Northern California championship game. Middlebrooks went on to a stellar career at Pepperdine, including being named the West Coast Conference's Player of the Year. After college he toured the world playing abroad professionally on several continents for 20 years. Today, Middlebrooks resides in Southern California, where he works with special-needs and at-risk youth.

On March 17, Kevin Reidy '18 competed in the annual "Battle of the Bands" competition at the Jewish Community Center on California Street. The event featured a dozen bands made up of high school age musicians from around the Bay Area, including SHC's popular band, "Peer Pressure". The competition involved two rounds of judging by a panel of five professionals working in the music industry, and a final elimination round that was voted on by the audience.

Kevin became the first winner in the history of the competition to win as a solo artist. Playing guitar, harmonica and vocals, Kevin performed his original compositions "Unfortunate Son" and "Faked a Smile", as well as a cover of the Paul Simon song "The Only Living Boy in New York". Kevin's recordings can be heard on the website SoundCloud, under the stage name Pope Suburban.

The awards for winning the competition included a cash prize, a recording studio session for Kevin to record and produce his songs, his being invited to be one of the opening acts for the S.F. Rock Project performance at the Hotel Utah (back on March 25), and a radio show featuring Kevin with an interview and performance. The radio show will be live this coming Monday, May 28 on KPOO - FM 89.5. It will be on the show of DJ Marilynn from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. KPOO is POOr People's Radio, a Community Radio station, and can also be heard on kpoo.com.

Jules Anthony Levaggi

October 6, 1927 to May 11, 2018

Jules was born at St. Francis Hospital in San Francisco on October 6, 1927 to Elvira Dorothy Garibaldi and Antone Tony Levaggi. He was a California Pioneer, with his family members arriving from Italy in the 1840s. He grew up in Plymouth, Amador County, and San Francisco, attending St. Vincent de Paul School and St. Ignatius High School. In 1945, after his freshman year at the University of San Francisco, Jules volunteered to join the U.S. Army and served two years in Texas. He returned to complete his studies at USF, where he became increasingly interested in the field of social work. This led him to complete a master's degree in Social Work from Columbia University and begin a lifelong career in the field.

Jules spent several subsequent years in the 50s in Oklahoma, where he worked for the State Department of Child Welfare. It was there in Oklahoma City that he met his future wife, Suzanne Mideke. They married there in 1957, after which they permanently relocated to San Francisco, where they would later raise their family together.

Jules devoted a total of sixty years of service in the social work field. He was first employed as a licensed clinical social worker at The Family Service Agency of San Francisco; then, for the next 29 years, he worked at the McAuley Neuropsychiatric Institute of St. Mary's Hospital, and finally with the City and County of San Francisco Adolescent and Adult Services for a further 25 years. He also maintained an active private practice in individual and group counseling from 1958 until one month before his death.

For 25 years he served on the founding board of the International Conference for the Advancement of Social Work in Private Practice (ICAPP) and was the organization's Vice President and President for many years. He was also President of The Children's Garden, a foster care agency.

Jules was deeply fond of his experiences with his many professional colleagues and his numerous clients over the years. Many of his clients continued to see him privately in his home well after his official retirement at 84 years of age. He loved meeting people and making friends, and understood and encouraged the best qualities in everyone he met.

An elegant and gentle man, he had a natural understanding and appreciation for all kinds of music and theater, which he shared, wholeheartedly, with his wife. He stood by and loved his family, fully supporting their dreams and endeavors in every possible way.

Jules is survived by his wife of 60 years, Suzanne, their five grown children: Jonathan Antone; Christian Rex, his wife Anadith and their two children Isabella Jules and Annika Jane; Madeleine Sophia and her husband Rudy Murieen; Francesca Suzanne, her husband Tim Howard and their two children Jules Robert and Chiara Valentina; and Annaliese Isabelle and her partner Dale Fanning. His younger brother Lloyd and their parents predeceased Jules.

For three years Jules and his family received invaluable care and attention from two caregivers: Araceli and Mark. During the last three weeks, the Kaiser Hospice team provided additional support to him and the family.

Jules Anthony Levaggi died peacefully at home on Friday morning, May 11, 2018 with his family at his side. The cause of his death was complications of diabetes.

During his 90 years of life, Jules loved and was loved by his family. His was a life well lived.

Family, friends and colleagues are invited to attend his funeral mass on May 29, 2018 at 11:00 am at St. Dominic's Catholic Church, 2390 Bush St. at Steiner St. San Francisco, CA.

Burial will take place on May 31, 2018 at 1:00 pm in the Pioneer Cemetery, Plymouth, CA

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Salesian Boys and Girls Club. Attention Randy De Martini 680 Filbert St, SF, 94133.

Cooper Viet delivers salutatory from Philadelphia

Cooper, who is currently in Philadelphia getting ready to row for SI crew in the national championships, offered his salutatory on video thanks to SITV moderator Mike Santos and SITV President Alex Ring '18, who flew there Tuesday. They filmed Wednesday and Thursday morning and then edited the video from 1 to 10 p.m. Thursday, taking the red-eye back to SFO to share Cooper's words with the assembled student body at the Awards Assembly. Enjoy!

Cooper Viet Salutatorian 2018

Below is Principal Ruff's introduction of Cooper:

The next speaker at our Awards Assembly is chosen by the Graduation Committee in consultation with the graduating class and the faculty, for the honor of giving the salutatory address.

The salutatorian is selected as an embodiment of the spirit of the Class of 2018. Manifesting the Ignatian values of our school and marked by the love and respect of the entire class, the salutatorian is chosen to address the community so that we can remember and celebrate the last four years. This year's salutatorian has demonstrated true versatility in what it is to be an Ignatian with gifts in the classroom, in athletics, on the stage, with the written word, and in our community. The accomplishments are many...

  • 200 hours of community service
  • writer for SI Live
  • leadership in the Finance Club, the Model United Nations Club, and Speech and Debate
  • published in both The Quill and Inside SI

All this, and still found time to play two sports

This is an impressive list and but this is an impressive young man.

It is my pleasure to introduce your 2018 Salutatorian, Cooper Veit.
